Operating Systems ​

Operating Systems define installable Windows editions and their related deployment metadata.

Open Software > Operating Systems.

What The Page Shows ​

The table shows:

  • operating system name
  • platform
  • description
  • default installation media
  • associated OS images
  • product key count

Open an operating system to manage its related images, product keys, and install answer files.

Use search to find operating systems by name, platform, or description.

Detail Tabs ​

The operating system detail page has these tabs:

  • Overview, for platform, description, default media, default install image index, associated image count, and product key count.
  • Images, for Windows OS image mappings and install image indexes.
  • Product keys, for tracked keys used by install jobs.
  • Install answer files, for setup documents such as Windows unattend XML or Debian preseed.

Linux operating systems also define the distribution, release codename, and architecture. Debian PXE uses these fields to select an exact approved Ordyn Agent package for the installation.

Linux operating systems are installed by the PXE boot endpoint job step. Ordyn waits for endpoint enrollment and agent instruction readiness before later job steps run. The Install OS image step supports Windows installations only.

The Install answer files tab is available for operating systems that use install answer file setup content.

Associated Images ​

Associated images are uploaded Windows installation media that can be used for the operating system. Linux PXE operating systems use the kernel, initrd, and distribution-signed UEFI shim from the boot image selected in PXE boot endpoint and do not use associated installation media.

Each mapping shows:

  • image name
  • image version
  • install image index
  • whether it is the default media

Use the default media when normal install jobs should use one image mapping unless the job pins another choice.

Product Keys ​

Product keys can be marked active or inactive. Use product keys where Windows deployment workflows need a tracked key for the selected operating system.

The product key table shows:

  • key name
  • product key
  • description
  • active state
  • claim count
  • last claimed timestamp

Usage counts increase when an install job claims a key for the operating system.

Install answer files ​

Install answer files belong to an operating system and can be selected by OS deployment jobs. Use them to standardize setup behavior for a specific edition or deployment scenario.

The install answer file list shows the name, description, and default state. Default install jobs resolve the operating system default, while job steps can also pin a specific saved config.
