Pending PXE Requests

Ordyn allows operators to approve or reject PXE requests from incoming devices.

The operator does not need to create the device in Ordyn before booting it. MAC addresses are reported by the device during PXE boot.

The Endpoints sidebar shows a PXE Requests shortcut only while at least one active request is waiting. Select that shortcut to open the page.

Boot Window

A PXE-booted device waits for a decision for up to five minutes. It checks for a decision every five seconds and can continue into the selected provisioning job during the same boot. The device does not need to reboot after approval.

If no decision is made during the boot window, the request expires and the device stops the attempt. Starting PXE again creates a new request.

If the device reports that PXE request capacity has been reached, wait briefly and start PXE again. The Net node protects active requests during unusually large boot bursts or interrupted connectivity.

Endpoint Matching

Ordyn compares the reported MAC address with endpoint network interfaces.

• A device with an active PXE provisioning job starts that job.
• A known endpoint without an active PXE provisioning job continues normal boot and does not enter the pending queue.
• A MAC address matching multiple endpoints also continues normal boot and does not enter the pending queue.
• No match creates a pending request that can be approved as a new staged Agent endpoint.

Approving A Request

Select Approve on a pending request.

1. Select the tenant.
2. Optionally select an endpoint folder in that tenant.
3. Enter the hostname.
4. Select the provisioning job.
5. Choose Approve and start job.

The job selector includes jobs whose first task supports staged endpoint provisioning:

• PXE boot endpoint
• Install OS image

Approval creates the staged endpoint, assigns it to the detecting Net node, creates its persistent job assignment, and starts a job run for the request.

If the job cannot start, the request stays pending and the endpoint preparation is not retained. Correct the job or permissions and approve the request again while its boot window is active.

If the MAC address becomes associated with an endpoint while the approval panel is open, Ordyn closes the request for normal boot and does not create another endpoint or job run.

Rejecting A Request

Select Reject, optionally enter a reason, and confirm the rejection. The waiting device stops the current attempt. A later PXE boot creates a separate request that can be reviewed independently.

Use rejection for an unexpected device, an incorrect network boot, or a request that should not enter provisioning.

Permissions

Users without Net node update permission can open the page but cannot approve or reject requests.

Troubleshooting

If a device does not appear:

• confirm that DHCP sends the device to the intended Net node
• confirm that the iPXE bootstrap reaches the Net node's dynamic boot script
• verify that the device reports a valid MAC address
• check whether the five-minute boot window has expired
• if the device reports that request capacity was reached, wait briefly and retry the PXE boot

If approval is unavailable or fails:

• select a job beginning with PXE boot endpoint or Install OS image
• confirm access to update the endpoint and run the job
